Antonio Francesco Peruzzini trained in the workshop of his father Domenico, within a family of painters from Ancona. He specialised in landscape, drawing on Salvator Rosa’s inventions and on northern European painting encountered in Italy. Dense vegetation, uneven terrain and unsettled skies shape his compositions, while rapid, luminous brushwork gives particular weight to changing effects of light.
Landscape with a Rustic House, Tower and Figures, in Genoa’s Museo Luxoro, illustrates this vocabulary between 1690 and 1710. Its earlier association with Magnasco reflects the attribution problems surrounding their collaborations. At the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Landscape with the Temptation of Christ, painted around 1715, is catalogued jointly under Peruzzini and Alessandro Magnasco. The Genoese canvas also leaves open the question of Magnasco’s possible contribution to its figures.
