French painter and printmaker Étienne Morillon (1884–1949) trained at the fine arts schools of Lyon and Paris. Returning to Lyon in 1910, he established a studio in the Ainay district. He helped found the Ziniars in 1920 and the Salon du Sud-Est in 1924, contributing to the renewal of the city’s artistic life.
Following Divisionist experiments, his paintings favoured strongly structured compositions informed by Cézanne, Derain and Cubism. His subjects include still lifes, portraits and landscapes of Lyon and Provence. He contributed to the Lyon pavilion at the 1937 international exhibition and illustrated Alexandre Arnoux’s Un journal d’exil with woodcuts in 1944. La Famille du peintre is held by Lyon’s Musée des Beaux-Arts, while the Musée Paul-Dini owns a presumed self-portrait.
This profile brings together identity references for Étienne Morillon and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
