Adelsteen Normann paints Norwegian fjords, including the Sognefjord, the Nærøyfjord and the Romsdalfjord. His practice combines working in direct contact with the landscape, from a boat, with using his own photographs as models to develop larger-format compositions in the studio. From 1869, he studied at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts, where Andreas Müller, Albert Flamm and Eugen Dücker were among his teachers.
His career also took him into the artistic circles of Düsseldorf and Berlin: he was a member of the Künstlerverein Malkasten in Düsseldorf and the Verein Berliner Künstler in Berlin, and ran a painting school in Berlin attended mainly by young women. According to a biographical source, he supported the painter Gunnar Berg and helped organise an exhibition of Edvard Munch in Berlin. He took part in international exhibitions, including two world’s fairs and the Salon de Paris.
A canvas entitled Le Fjord, signed and dated 1881, measures 120 × 192.5 cm without the frame. Fjordlandschaft bei Mondschein, another documented work, is an oil on canvas measuring 48 × 36 cm, signed “A Normann” at the lower left.
