Born in Brooklyn in 1951, Julian Schnabel is an American painter who also works as a film director. After studying in Houston, he entered the Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program in New York in 1973. His plate paintings began in 1978 with The Patients and the Doctors. In these works, the support becomes a decisive component of the image. Ceramic fragments give the surface a physical presence that creates tension between figuration and abstraction.
The Whitney holds Christ Entering Zihuatanejo, dated 1980, and Hope, from 1982, among other works. Both belong to the early years of his international recognition. The Aspen Art Museum’s exhibition of the plate paintings highlighted the continuity of his material experiments. With Basquiat, released in 1996, Schnabel also explored an artist’s life through cinema.
