In Richard Jackson’s work, painting becomes a means of producing sculptures and installations as well as works related to performance. Born in 1939 in Sacramento, California, he lives and works in Los Angeles.
In his early works, he uses wet canvases to transfer paint onto other canvases or directly onto the walls of the exhibition venue. The gallery also describes mechanical devices that project, squirt or spread paint across different surfaces, including within the gallery space. Jackson presents this approach as a way of extending the possibilities of painting, not criticising it: he is interested in how it can be pushed beyond its usual forms.
