Pietro Martire Neri was an Italian painter from Cremona, active during the seventeenth century. Trained in the circles of Malosso and subsequently Domenico Fetti, he worked in Mantua before pursuing his career between Milan and Rome. Portraiture occupied an important place in his production alongside religious paintings intended for churches in Lombardy.
His pictorial language combines dense handling, Venetian colour and contrasts of light associated with Caravaggesque naturalism. The Adoration of the Magi at the Certosa di Pavia and the Healing of the Man Born Blind in Cremona illustrate these concerns. In Rome, he moved in the artistic milieu of Velázquez and held leading responsibilities at the Accademia di San Luca. The Prado attributes to him a portrait of an Italian ecclesiastic reflecting this stylistic proximity.
This profile brings together identity references for Pietro Martire Neri and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
