Pierre Lesieur (1922–2011), catalogued here as Pierre Le Sueur, was a French painter born in Paris. After briefly attending the École des Beaux-Arts and studying with André Lhote, he continued his training in independent studios, including the Académie Montmartre. He exhibited at Galerie Bignou in 1952 and received the Prix de la Critique in 1958. Travels and his studios in Paris and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence nourished his work.
His interiors give bookshelves, display cabinets, tables and armchairs leading roles within the picture. Colour organises space into broad areas while retaining recognisable signs of everyday life. These concerns connect him with Bonnard and Matisse. Exploring relationships between objects, light and memory, Lesieur moves between abstract construction and intimate representation rather than simply describing the furnishings of his rooms.
