Dorothy Iannone

Born in Boston, Dorothy Iannone (1933–2022) began painting in 1959 after studying literature. In New York she ran the Stryke Gallery from 1963 to 1967. Her early abstract explorations gradually gave way to figures surrounded by ornament and an explicit expression of sexuality. Peoples (1966–1967), a series of cut-out and painted wooden figures, records this development. Meeting Dieter Roth in Iceland in 1967 began a relationship that lasted until 1974; her circle also included Robert Filliou and Emmett Williams. A DAAD scholarship brought her to Berlin in 1976. Working on paper, canvas and wood, she sometimes incorporated video. Both the Berlinische Galerie and Zurich’s Migros Museum devoted retrospective exhibitions to her in 2014.
