For Philippe Cognée, the photographic image is not merely a motif: it serves as the starting point for a painting that engages with materiality. In his encaustic practice, he lays a sheet of plastic film over the paint, then heats it with an iron, melting the wax beneath. This approach leads to an examination of the place of painting in an image-saturated environment.
In 1982, he obtained the Diplôme national supérieur d’arts plastiques from the École des Beaux-Arts de Nantes. A laureate of the Villa Médicis, he stayed in Rome in 1990.
In 2023, « Philippe Cognée. La peinture d’après » is presented at the musée Bourdelle from 15 March to 16 July, while the exhibition « Philippe Cognée » is presented at the musée de l’Orangerie from 15 March to 4 September.
The Alice Pauli gallery in Lausanne also presented his exhibition « Sous les feux de la lune ». An auction catalogue lists « Vanité », a work from 2006 made in encaustic on canvas mounted on wood, measuring 50 × 70 cm.
