Boris Nzebo

Documented citizenships : Cameroon · Gabon

Boris Nzebo develops paintings in Douala that explore relationships between personal appearance and urban space. Born in Gabon, he began by painting signs for hairdressing salons. Exchanges with Koko Komégné and Hervé Yamguen, followed by a residency at ArtBakery in 2007, helped shape his training. This experience also introduced him to photography, video and performance, extending the range of his artistic practice beyond painting.

His compositions overlay silhouetted heads, elaborate hairstyles and architectural facades in colourful arrangements. Urban Style, exhibited in Manchester in 2016, explored this encounter between identity and the city. In Miss Monter-Descendre, painted that year, the back of a woman’s head is superimposed on a busy Douala street. Executed in acrylic and Posca pen, the work places the presentation of the self within everyday urban circulation.

This profile brings together identity references for Boris Nzebo and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
