Nicolò Cassana was a portrait painter active in the circle of Grand Prince Ferdinando de’ Medici. His Self-Portrait at the Accademia Tadini in Lovere, dated between 1690 and 1710, testifies to the importance of individual likenesses in his work. Portrait of a Man at the Rijksmuseum presents a half-length sitter wearing red with a white cravat. Formerly regarded as a self-portrait by Salvator Rosa, it is now assigned to Cassana.
Ferdinando's confidence extended to interventions in paintings from his collection. Cassana enlarged Rosso Fiorentino's Dei Altarpiece to fit a new Baroque frame. He also extended the upper part of Raphael's Madonna of the Baldachin, adding the canopy's crowning section and a coffered vault. These works demonstrate his role in presenting earlier masters at the Florentine court, alongside his own activity as a portraitist.
