Abraham Storck (1644–1708) was a Dutch marine painter whose repertoire combined imaginary southern harbours with scenes of coastal life in his own country. Different vessel types, moving boats and activities on shore shaped his small-scale compositions. Pleasure yachts, ceremonial gatherings, passengers and spectators occupy a particular place in his Dutch views.
His Mediterranean ports bring merchant shipping and antique architecture together in invented landscapes, anticipating the taste for capriccios in the following century. Greenwich’s National Maritime Museum holds A Dutch Ship Entering a Mediterranean Port. Precision in the depiction of rigging combines with animated human activity. These qualities make Storck’s marine painting as much a representation of social spectacle as a study of ships and navigation.
