Maurice Loutreuil

Born : 1885Died : 1925Documented citizenships : France

Maurice Loutreuil (1885–1925) was a French painter whose subjects included landscapes, portraits, nudes and still lifes. After evening classes with Jules Hervé-Mathé in Le Mans, he continued his training in Paris with Ferdinand Humbert. He also worked in fresco and met André Masson in Paul Baudoüin’s studio. Stays in Italy, Tunisia and southern France accompanied an approach to painting that he sought to make direct and spontaneous, working from nature. In 1921 he participated in the Salon de l’œuvre anonyme, which he had initiated with André Deslignères and Émile Perrin. His first solo exhibition followed in 1922. Later retrospectives at the Musée de Tessé and in Céret helped introduce his work to further audiences.
