Marcel Wibault

Marcel Wibault’s painting spans several fields: alpine landscapes, the work on the Mont Blanc Tunnel, rocks and, later, portraits of children and scenes of everyday life. Born in Besançon in 1904, he died in Chamonix in 1998.
His first drawings depict soldiers of Besançon’s 60th Infantry Regiment; he later became a student at the Beaux-Arts. A member of the Club alpin français, he discovered the Alps and also belonged to the Société des peintres de montagne. Several recorded titles evoke this world, from “Montagnes et chalets, harmonie pastorale” to “Les Aiguilles de Chamonix en hiver”, as well as “La Mer de Glace” and “Peuterey”.
In the 1960s, he depicted the construction work on the Mont Blanc Tunnel in paintings and drawings. Commissioned by the Natural History Museum and the city of Geneva, he also painted rocks. As he grew older, he gradually moved away from working outdoors in favour of the studio, where he produced portraits of children and scenes of everyday life, including “La Fondue”.
In Chamonix, his former chalet, Alpenrose, became a memorial space and a museum dedicated to the artist; there he had made some of the furniture and carved figures. The artistic legacy continues in his family: his son Lionel, also a painter, was his pupil.
