Marcel Mouly

Born : 1918Died : 2008Documented citizenships : France

Born in Paris in 1918 and died in Clamart in 2008, Marcel Mouly found the subject for his first drawings early on, in 1931, in the port of Le Havre. That same year, he left school and went on to work in several occupations, including newspaper seller, dental mechanic, wine-cellar worker and wine deliveryman. In 1935, he attended André Auclair’s evening classes at the Beaux-Arts studios on Boulevard du Montparnasse.

After completing his military service in the Navy from 1938 to 1940, he met Édouard Pignon in Boulogne-Billancourt and shared the studio of the sculptor Chaim Jacob Lipchitz with him. He also practised modelling in terracotta and pottery. His painted work includes still lifes, interior scenes, landscapes and seascapes. The biographical notice consulted identifies a Cubist inheritance in this work, notably in a composition described as architectural and in a perspective that Mouly reconstructs.

A solo exhibition at the Librairie Bergamasque in Paris is recorded in 1949. He took part in the Salon de Mai from 1946 to 1962; a long series of solo exhibitions is subsequently reported from 1950 to 2007, including a presentation in the latter year on Rue Saint-Honoré in Paris. In 1982, Mouly was one of the nine founding members of the Association 109. In 2007, he was also included in the group exhibition “Années 50 - L’alternative figurative” at the Musée d’Art Roger-Quilliot in Clermont-Ferrand.

His work also included illustration: he created the cover for Sergio Pitol’s L’Art de la fugue, published in Albi in 1997. He was appointed a Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1957. Diva Art Group awarded him a First Prize for lithography in 1973.
