Léon Hornecker began his training in Strasbourg as an apprentice in the Ott brothers’ glass workshop while attending evening drawing classes. He later taught drawing, painting and anatomy at the municipal art school. Landscapes and pastels formed part of a practice closely connected with the artistic life of Alsace. A member of the Cercle de Saint-Léonard, he also helped establish the Kunschthaafe, a meeting place for Strasbourg artists. His exhibitions nevertheless took him beyond the region to Nancy, Berlin and Paris. In the French capital, he maintained connections with Alsatian circles and with refugees during the First World War. His return to Alsace after the conflict continued this enduring cultural attachment.
