Léon Gischia, a painter born in Dax in 1903 and died in Venice in 1991, moved from the study of art history and archaeology to a practice that evolved over the decades from figuration towards geometric abstraction. After completing his secondary education in Dax, he studied these disciplines in Bordeaux, then prepared for the École normale supérieure at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris; in 1921, he chose painting and enrolled at the Académie moderne, where Émile Othon Friesz taught. From 1927 to 1930, he stayed in the United States and produced advertising drawings. In 1937, he took part in the Salon des Jeunes Artistes and, with Fernand Léger, contributed to the decoration of Le Corbusier’s Pavillon des Temps nouveaux for the Paris World’s Fair; the following year, he presented his first solo exhibition at the Galerie Jeanne Bucher.
The biographical source distinguishes several stages in his work. From 1917 to 1942, Gischia worked primarily on landscape, still life and portraiture, while also producing numerous drawings. Between 1942 and 1946, objects and figures were rendered in broad, flat areas under even lighting; from 1946 to 1960, his visual language evolved, through similar themes, to the limits of abstraction. From 1960 onwards, this evolution took the form of what the same source calls a “living geometrisation”. A founding member of the Salon de Mai, he took part in it from 1945 to 1957. His meeting with Jean Vilar in 1943 opened up another area of activity: from 1945, he collaborated with him on Meurtre dans la cathédrale, presented at the Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier. Between 1947 and 1963, he designed the sets and costumes for around thirty plays for the Théâtre national populaire, directed by Vilar.
In 1963, Gischia settled in Venice after exchanging his Paris studio for that of the painter Zoran Mušič. In 1968, he received a commission for two monumental enamelled lava panels intended to flank the entrance to the Faculty of Sciences at Jussieu. According to the biographical source, works by the artist are held in the collections of the Centre Pompidou, the National Gallery of Art in Washington and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. His activities also included publications on the arts and sculpture: with Lucien Mazenod and Jean Verrier, he co-authored Les Arts primitifs français : art mérovingien, art carolingien, art roman, published in 1938, and in 1945 he published La Sculpture en France depuis Rodin with Nicole Vedrès. An auction catalogue also documents a Composition in oil on canvas, measuring 45 × 65 cm, signed on the reverse, titled and numbered, and bearing the date “(19)74”. The provenance given there passes through the Galerie Anton Meier in Geneva and then a private collection in Switzerland.
