Jorge Castillo, born in Pontevedra in 1933, grew up in Buenos Aires after his family emigrated to Argentina. Largely self-taught, he also worked in technical drawing. Returning to Spain in 1955, he exhibited inks and gouaches at Madrid’s Galería Altamira in 1959. His subsequent career took him to Barcelona, Paris, Geneva and Berlin.
His painting and graphic work combine Surrealist figuration with abstraction. The triptych Palomares responds to the nuclear accident near that Spanish village in 1966. In Geneva, Castillo developed his printmaking, subsequently producing sequences devoted to Federico García Lorca and to lovers. A DAAD scholarship took him to Berlin in 1969. He also worked in New York and produced sculptures for public spaces.
