Louis Latapie

Louis Latapie, a French painter and printmaker born in Toulouse in 1891 and who died in Avignon in 1972, developed a body of work in which still lifes and female nudes feature in a strongly coloured style at the limits of Cubism. In the 1950s, the simplification of forms brought this work closer to abstraction. His work also extended into public space and the decorative arts: in 1927, he painted the pillar La Beauté et le peintre at the brasserie La Coupole in Paris. In 1951, several tapestries were made from his designs by the Beauvais and Gobelins manufactories; one was exhibited at the residence of the Consul General of France in Toronto.
His career was marked by moves between Paris and Toulon. On returning to the studio in 1920, he taught at the Académie Ranson. Settling in Toulon in 1925, he met Juan Gris there and founded a painting academy; he returned to Paris in 1927, then settled again in Toulon in 1930, while continuing to give a few classes in the capital. Financial difficulties led him to almost stop painting between 1932 and 1934 in order to relaunch his father-in-law’s photographic reportage agency, which he sold in 1936.
Latapie took part in the Venice Biennale in 1924. Two solo exhibitions are noted towards the end of his life: Petits formats, at the Galerie Urban in Paris in 1970, followed by a presentation at the Palais des papes in Avignon in 1971. After leaving the Moulin de Seine-Port in 1967 and returning to Paris, he settled in Avignon the following year. In 1963, he began writing his memoirs, Patafioles, published in 2005.
