Louis-Philippe Kamm, a painter and illustrator born in Strasbourg in 1882 and who died there in 1959, was nicknamed the “master of Drachenbronn”. His connection with this village is part of his family history: his grandfather, born in Wissembourg, was a schoolteacher there.
Kamm continued his training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where the monograph places him from 1901 to 1908. From 1903, he exhibited regularly in Strasbourg and Paris, as well as in Zurich, Wiesbaden, Frankfurt and Berlin. From 1908, he spent time in Drachenbronn every year; in early 1914, he withdrew there. In 1919, he joined the Groupe de Mai and took part in its exhibitions. In 1921, he became a member of the Salon d’Automne in Paris; his presence at the Bernheim-Jeune gallery is also recorded that year. In 1952, he was appointed a corresponding member of the Institut de France.
In 1936, Kamm illustrated L’Ami Fritz by Erckmann-Chatrian with around one hundred wash drawings; the book was published by La Vie en Alsace. His decorative work includes the organ console at the Protestant Saint-Paul Temple in Koenigshoffen, as well as decorations for the Temple in Munster and the school in Drachenbronn. Among the works recorded in Strasbourg collections, Les Moissonneurs, an oil on canvas from 1921 measuring 120.5 × 130.5 cm, is held at the Musée d’Art moderne et contemporain. La Mariée d’Oberseebach, an oil on canvas dated to around 1937 and measuring 92.5 × 73.5 cm, is recorded at the Musée Alsacien de Strasbourg.
After the artist’s death, several retrospectives were held in Strasbourg, in 1960, 1967, 1974 and 1984, followed by one at the Musée historique de Haguenau in 1995. In 2011, Emmanuel Honegger published Louis-Philippe Kamm, 1882-1959 : carnet de croquis.
