Born in Jincheng, Liaoning province, in 1963, Liu Xiaodong has renewed Chinese figurative painting since the 1990s. His pictures follow social transformations through encounters with people, relatives and inhabited places. Academic training informs a practice attentive to posture, atmosphere and concrete circumstances. Working on location gives his figures a presence that connects individual experience with collective change.
His projects have taken him to the Three Gorges Dam construction site and the border between the United States and Mexico. In 2017 he stayed in Uummannaq, Greenland, painting local residents and children from a residential home. Shown at the Louisiana Museum in 2019, paintings, drawings and diary pages record this encounter. Landscape remains connected to human activity rather than being treated as an independent spectacle of nature.
