The Dutch painter and printmaker Jan van Huchtenburg (1647–1733) devoted a substantial part of his practice to military history. In Paris in 1667, he worked with Adam François van der Meulen at the Gobelins manufactory. Returning to Haarlem, he joined the Guild of Saint Luke in 1670 and subsequently combined painting with dealing in pictures. His relationship with Prince Eugene of Savoy broadened the scope of his battle subjects. Attack on a Convoy and The Battle of Ramillies, at the Mauritshuis, exemplify this aspect of his work. He also painted portraits, including that of Henry Casimir II of Nassau-Dietz. Printmaking extended his activity as a painter, notably through the publication of battles produced with Jean Dumont in 1725.
