Friedrich Georg Weitsch

Born : 1758Died : 1828

Friedrich Georg Weitsch came from Brunswick and learned painting from his father, Pascha Johann Friedrich, before studying in Düsseldorf. Alongside portraits, he produced history paintings and landscapes. His Portrait of Alexander von Humboldt of 1806, in Berlin’s Alte Nationalgalerie, places the scientist in an idealised forest. Flowers in his hands and a herbarium on his knees identify his botanical activity.

The composition also circulated in print: Johann Joseph Freidhoff reproduced it in 1808 after Weitsch. In another painting devoted to Humboldt and Bonpland at the foot of Chimborazo, the artist combines landscape with scientific work. Humboldt receives a sextant from an indigenous companion, while Bonpland bends over a book beneath a tent. Instruments and gestures thus organise the pictorial account of the expedition.

This profile brings together identity references for Friedrich Georg Weitsch and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
