Alexandre Nikolaïevitch Benois combined painting, art history and stage design. In Saint Petersburg, he helped establish Mir Iskusstva with Léon Bakst and Sergei Diaghilev, creating a forum for exchanges between Western developments and Russian traditions. His sets and costumes for the Ballets russes, notably Petrushka, gave this encounter a theatrical form in which space and figures contributed to storytelling. After working in the Hermitage’s Old Masters gallery, he settled permanently in Paris in 1926. Commissions from the Opéra, Comédie-Française and other European stages continued his activity. Alongside this work, drawings and watercolours recorded his travels, including visits to Brittany. Illustration and memoirs completed a practice connecting images, performance and knowledge of the past.
