Johann Martin von Rohden

Born : 1778Died : 1868

Johann Martin von Rohden was a German landscape painter whose career developed principally in Rome. Trained in Kassel, he first reached the city in 1795. His approach to landscape was close to that of Joseph Anton Koch and Johann Christian Reinhart. Careful studies of trees, plants and light informed compositions in which architecture and terrain organise the pictorial space.

Hermitage near Albano, a drawing in the Städel, bears an inscription recording its execution in Rome in 1818. Pen, brush, pencil and white highlights bring together several graphic techniques. Rohden also maintained links with Kassel: between 1829 and 1839, he produced a cycle of the times of day for the Rote Palais. This commission brought his experience of Italian landscape into a sequence structured around changes in light and time.

This profile brings together identity references for Johann Martin von Rohden and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
