Jules Tavernier (1844–1889), a painter and illustrator born in Paris, trained with Félix-Joseph Barrias. In the 1870s, his work for Harper’s Magazine took him to California. He subsequently continued his career in Hawaii, working as a portraitist and landscape painter, and died in Honolulu.
Hawaiian volcanoes occupy an important place in his work. In 1886 he created a panorama of Kilauea measuring three metres high and twenty-seven metres long. From a central platform, visitors could view Halema’uma’u and the Volcano House. Exhibited in Hawaii and later transported to the United States, the panorama is now unlocated. His pupils included David Howard Hitchcock and Amédée Joullin. Works by Tavernier are held in Honolulu and at the Stark Museum of Art in Orange.
