尤勒斯·佩拉希姆

Born : 1914Died : 2008Documented citizenships : France · Romania

Jules Perahim (1914–2008), born Iuliș Blumenfeld in Bucharest, worked as a painter, draughtsman, illustrator and theatrical designer. During the 1930s, his contributions to Unu and Alge brought artistic experimentation together with political dissent. After the war, an increasingly restrictive cultural climate directed his activity towards illustrated books, stage design and the decorative arts.

Composition surréaliste (1931) turns human bodies into grey, seemingly stony matter; Paysage organique (1932) dissolves geographical landmarks within a setting inhabited by ghostly presences. These works establish an unsettling continuity between figures and their natural surroundings. Settling in France in 1969, Perahim returned to such dream imagery. African journeys subsequently inspired expansive imaginary landscapes, while exchanges with literature remained an important source for his artistic invention.

This profile brings together identity references for 尤勒斯·佩拉希姆 and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
