Juan Uslé
Born : 1954Documented citizenships : Spain
Born in Santander in 1954, Juan Uslé studied fine art in Valencia from 1973 to 1977 before developing a career shared between Spain and New York. His move to the United States in the 1980s accompanied an increasing turn towards abstraction. Repeated marks, fields of colour and irregular forms organise a painting attentive to rhythm, in which everyday experience remains present without becoming a narrative. Relationships between surface and depth, sensation and construction are central concerns. Participation in documenta IX in 1992 and the Venice Biennale in 2005 marks his international career. Museum presentations, including at the Reina Sofía, trace a continuing exploration of the possibilities of gesture and colour within painting.
