The Venetian painter Francesco Guardi was born and died in Venice (1712–1793). His elder brother Gian Antonio trained him and took over the family workshop after their father’s death in 1716. From 1735 to 1743, Francesco also worked in Michele Marieschi’s workshop. His first work signed by him alone dates from 1740; it is referred to as Saint in Ecstasy or Saint Adoring the Eucharist.
In 1782, he produced paintings on the occasion of the visit of Grand Duke Paul of Russia to Venice. The Lempertz catalogue attributes to Guardi the Capriccio con arco rovinato e mura di paese, an oil on canvas measuring 37.5 × 27.5 cm; Morassi dates the work to around 1770–1775 and notes several variants of the composition. This painting is listed as no. 131 in the exhibition Mostra dei Guardi, held at Palazzo Grassi in Venice from 5 June to 10 October 1965.
