Joseph Hussenot

Born : 1827Died : 1896Documented citizenships : France

Joseph Hussenot, born in Metz in 1827 and deceased in Versailles in 1896, was a French painter and draughtsman whose work linked religious composition with printed imagery. He supplied drawings to the Metz publisher Gangel, contributing to the circulation of narrative images intended for a broad audience. The Capture of the Fortress of Bomarsund, published in 1854, depicts an episode of the Crimean War.

His religious work is represented by studies for the Stations of the Cross at Notre-Dame-de-la-Croix, held by the Petit Palais. The fifth station, dated 1876, combines pen, black ink, watercolour and gold to depict Simon of Cyrene helping Jesus. Across the reproduced sheet and the drawing intended for a church interior, Hussenot constructs scenes in which collective action carries a historical or sacred narrative.

This profile brings together identity references for Joseph Hussenot and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
