Born in Seattle, John-Franklin Koenig (1924–2008) began painting in Biarritz in 1945 at the university for American military personnel. He moved to Paris in 1948 and met Jean-Robert Arnaud. The Galerie Arnaud and the magazine Cimaise, to which he contributed a dance column, helped promote abstraction during the 1950s. His artistic investigations concerned light, space and rhythm. He used a wide range of techniques, including collage, oil, acrylic, ink, gouache, printmaking and tapestry. Solo exhibitions were held in Paris, Ascona, Seattle and Tokyo. Dividing his life between Seattle and Paris, he returned to Seattle in 2004. He was appointed Commander of the French Order of Arts and Letters in 1994.
This profile brings together identity references for John-Franklin Koenig and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
