Jean Chevolleau

Born : 1924Died : 1996Documented citizenships : France

Born in La Roche-sur-Yon in 1924 and died in Fontenay-le-Comte in 1996, Jean Chevolleau was a painter whose work addressed a range of subjects: portraits, nudes, horses, landscapes and still lifes. In a commentary on his work, views of the ports of La Rochelle and Peñíscola, Spain, are singled out for their sense of composition and solid architecture. He also created stained-glass windows for the churches of Le Breuil-Barret, Saint-Hilaire-de-Loulay and Saint-Germain-de-Prinçay.

In 1946, he left the Vendée for Paris and enrolled at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, in Souverbie’s studio. At the same time, he took printmaking classes at the Jaudon and Lemagny studios and attended Othon Friesz’s studio at the Grande Chaumière. In 1948, he qualified as a drawing teacher for the City of Paris, a position he held until 1960, when he gave it up to devote himself to painting. After spending around thirty years in his Paris studio, he returned to Fontenay-le-Comte in 1975, where he thereafter spent most of his time.

In Puteaux, he regularly exhibited his work at Camille Renault’s restaurant. His career was marked by distinctions: in 1956, he received a silver medal at the Prix du Palais-Royal in Paris and the L. Moreau painting prize in L’Isle-Adam; in 1958, he was selected for the Prix Pacquement of the Musée d’art moderne de Paris, and in 1960 he received the Prix international du Gemmail in Paris. He was appointed a Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1979, and a Chevalier of the Ordre des Palmes académiques in 1987. Among the works documented in auction records is an oil on canvas entitled “Abstraktion”, signed lower left and measuring 24 × 11 cm; it sold for 170 CHF against an estimate of 300 CHF.
