Jean Bertholle, a French painter born in Dijon in 1909 and who died in Paris in 1996, moved through several approaches to painting: his initially figurative work turned towards a sensitive abstraction before returning to figuration. Painting was joined by works in stained glass, mosaic and tapestry, broadening the range of media in his practice. His training took him from the École des beaux-arts de Saint-Étienne, where he enrolled in 1928, to the École des beaux-arts de Lyon, which he attended from 1930 to 1932. There he formed ties with the sculptor Étienne-Martin. From 1933 to 1934, he continued his studies in Paris at the École nationale des beaux-arts, in the studio of Paul Albert Laurens. Before the war, he was among the founding members of the group Témoignage, established in 1936–1937. In 1937, he took part with Bissière, Le Moal and Manessier in creating the decorations for the railway and air transport pavilion at the Exposition internationale de Paris. Among his stained-glass commissions was one for the Carmel de Cherbourg, for which he made stained-glass windows in 1953.
From 1965 to 1980, Bertholle taught mural art at the École des beaux-arts de Paris. The sources differ on the founding date of the Académie Saint-Roch, dedicated to painting: one dates it to 1980 and another to 1983. He joined the Académie des beaux-arts in 1983. Several retrospectives were devoted to him in the 1960s, notably in Metz, Luxembourg and Caen. Others were held in the 1970s in Dijon, Besançon and Saint-Germain-en-Laye. His works are listed in the collections of the Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Centre Pompidou, as well as in those of museums in Lille, Lyon, Grenoble, Orléans, Colmar and Metz.
