Jean-Yves Couliou, a French painter born in Landerneau in 1916 and deceased in Lorient in 1995, grew up near Pont-Aven, the region his parents came from. After secondary school, he trained for eight years at the fine arts schools in Rennes and Paris, at the École nationale supérieure des arts appliqués and in the decorative arts in Paris. His teachers included Maurice Brianchon, Jean Dupas, Raymond Legueult, Roland Oudot and Roger Bissière. A prisoner of war in Germany for five years during the Second World War, he returned to Lorient in 1949. There he became a drawing teacher and worked in that role until his retirement in 1976.
Sources describe a body of painting shaped both by naïve art and poetic reality, and by explorations ranging from Expressionism to non-figuration, through lyrical and geometric abstraction. According to the biographical notice, works by Couliou are held at the Musée national d’Art moderne in Paris and in museums in Belgrade, Glasgow, Vannes, Pont-Aven and Ernée. An auction catalogue records an oil on canvas entitled “Bretonische Landschaft bei Camaret-sur-Mer”, signed at the lower left and bearing a label dated 1956 on the reverse. Measuring 54 × 65 cm, the work was sold for CHF 1,800 against an estimate of CHF 2,000. The biographical notice states that he receives commissions and sells works to the State in 1939.
This profile brings together identity references for Jean-Yves Couliou and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
