Jean-Noël Vandaele

Documented citizenships : France

Jean-Noël Vandaele is a French painter who moved from abstraction to figurative reinterpretations of earlier artworks. Vivid colours and simplified details accompany Yello Head, his character with a smiling yellow profile. His paintings and drawings featured in Hello Yello! at Villanova in 2012.

Vandaele attended the fine arts school in Dunkerque and studied with Louis-Olivier Chesnay. Two illustrated French publications from 1983 in the Van Abbemuseum library document an earlier stage of his career. One has twelve pages; the other, by O. Delcuse, has twenty. His interest in Shakespeare also led to connections between painting and the stage. In York he collaborated with actor Colin David Reese on a project combining visual artworks with theatrical interpretation.

This profile brings together identity references for Jean-Noël Vandaele and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
