Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720–1778), also known in French as Piranèse, worked as both a printmaker and an architect. Trained in Venice, he went to Rome in 1740 and developed his etching skills there with Giuseppe Vasi. His first series devoted to architecture and perspective appeared in 1743. The Vedute di Roma, published from 1748, give Roman monuments a central place in his printed work. The Carceri explore a different register: imaginary architectural spaces, whose plates he revised for the 1761 edition. His investigations also encompass Il Campo Marzio, published in 1762, and designs for fireplaces and furniture. Among his realised architectural projects is the church of the Priory of Malta on the Aventine, where work was completed in 1766.
