Janus La Cour devoted his painting to the landscapes of Denmark and his European travels. After drawing lessons with Wilhelm Marstrand, he attended the Copenhagen Academy from 1857 to 1864. Closely associated with P. C. Skovgaard, without formally being his pupil, he lived in Skovgaard’s house from 1861 to 1884. During the 1860s he travelled in France, Italy and Switzerland.
He developed his paintings from numerous nature studies and sketches. A view of Lake Nemi earned him an Academy medal in 1871. In Helgenæs Coast with Stones, painted in 1875 and held by Nivaagaard, carefully observed sand, stones and seaweed occupy the foreground. Despite living in Copenhagen, he regularly returned to paint the coastline of eastern Jutland.
