Jan Wyck was born in Haarlem and developed most of his career in England. The son of the painter Thomas Wyck, he worked in battle painting, equestrian portraiture, hunting scenes and landscape. His English activity is documented from the 1670s. Horses and the movement of military forces occupy a substantial place within this varied production.
Royal Museums Greenwich holds William III Landing at Brixham, Torbay, 5 November 1688, a painting dated 1688. The Government Art Collection also holds William III at the Battle of the Boyne, attributed to Wyck and dated around 1690–1695. These subjects combine princely portraiture with political and military events. Reproduction through prints extended the circulation of his compositions beyond the individual paintings themselves.
This profile brings together identity references for Jan Wyck and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
