David Alfaro Siqueiros was a central figure in Mexican muralism. His political commitment accompanied a conception of art as a public, collective experience. He sought to integrate painting with architecture and to construct perspectives that accounted for viewers moving through space. Monumental bodies and dynamic compositions gave his images an educational and combative purpose connected with the conflicts of his time.
This ambition also required technical change. Siqueiros used industrial paints and explored methods beyond the conventional brush. In his 1936 Experimental Workshop in New York, participants including Jackson Pollock poured and dripped colour onto horizontal supports. Collective Suicide connects material experimentation with a vision of the conquest of Mexico, turning historical memory into an indictment of contemporary violence and totalitarian power through the charged language of painting.
