Painter and sculptor Paul Rebeyrolle developed a body of work in which nature, society and humanity recur as themes, in a painting marked by a pronounced materiality. Born on 3 November 1926, he grew up in the countryside and continued his secondary education in Limoges before moving to Paris in October 1944, having obtained his philosophy baccalaureate. At the Louvre, he discovered the Old Masters—from the Venetians to Goya—and also frequented galleries and contemporary art salons, preferring the example of artists to formal instruction. The 1950s saw his artistic identity take shape: he received the Prix de la Jeune Peinture and held his first solo exhibitions.
In 1959, for the first Paris Biennale, he created Planchemouton, a canvas measuring more than four metres by fourteen, which earned him first prize. In the early 1960s, he left Paris to live and work in the countryside, first in Aube, then in Côte-d’Or. From then on, his work developed notably in series, from Coexistences (1970) to Clônes (2000), including Faillite de la science bourgeoise (1973), Natures mortes et pouvoir (1975) and Les Panthéons (1990–1991). Projection, assemblage and the working of various materials contribute to the construction of large-scale compositions. In 1970, Coexistences was presented at Galerie Maeght in Paris, and Jean-Paul Sartre wrote the foreword to the exhibition catalogue. The Art Institute of Chicago lists Scarf, a work dated 1970. In 1995, a space bearing Rebeyrolle’s name was built in Eymoutiers, his hometown. The artist died on 7 February 2005 in Boudreville, in Burgundy.
