Izaak van Oosten

Isaak van Oosten was a Flemish landscape painter born in Antwerp in 1613 who died in 1661. His Landscape with Boats at the Prado, painted on copper between 1652 and 1661, adapts a composition by Jan Brueghel the Elder. The village street and river form two diagonals leading the eye into the distance.

Haymaking at the Musée Jeanne d’Aboville, also painted in oil on copper, brings agricultural labour into this repertoire of inhabited landscapes. The Earthly Paradise in Rennes instead presents a biblical scene with Adam, Eve and numerous animals, including an elephant, a lion and a parrot. From rural life to the story of Creation, landscape accommodates human and animal presences in different combinations.

This profile brings together identity references for Izaak van Oosten and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
