Born in Bratilovu in 1871, Ipolit Strâmbu studied fine arts in Bucharest and Munich. His stay in Paris in 1901 contributed to the exchanges that led to Tinerimea Artistică, an association important to the renewal of Romanian art. That same year he became a professor at Bucharest's School of Fine Arts, which he directed during the German occupation of 1917–1918.
Between 1919 and 1921 he accompanied student groups to Baia Mare during the summer and taught alongside János Thorma. Outdoor studies and studio sessions informed paintings attentive to landscapes, interiors and female figures. Visare, dated 1919, belongs to this period. Also the author of drawing and art-education manuals, Strâmbu died in Bucharest in 1934.
