Henri-Nicolas Van Gorp is particularly noted as a portraitist; his genre scenes, too, circulated beyond painting, often reproduced as prints. An engraving attributed to him depicts a meeting of the Jacobin Club chaired by Alexandre de Lameth, in the library of the Jacobin convent; the source links it to the musée Carnavalet.
Received as a student at the Académie royale in June 1773 and placed under the protection of Étienne Jeaurat, he remained there for about twelve years as a pensioner. The source presents him as a pupil or fellow student of Louis-Léopold Boilly. He exhibited at the Salon de Paris from 1796 to 1819.
During the Directory, he lived on rue du Coq-Honoré, before residing at no. 203 rue Saint-Honoré, at least until 1802. Over the course of his career, he also became a gouache manufacturer.
This profile brings together identity references for Henri Nicolas van Gorp and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
