Trained under Jean-Paul Laurens at the École des beaux-arts de Paris, Gustave Surand exhibited at the Salon des artistes français from 1881 and received an honourable mention there in 1884. In the same year, a travel grant enabled him to visit Tunisia.
The depiction of large felids is a documented strand of his work: he painted them from studies made from life. Les Lions crucifiés, a large oil on canvas measuring 5 × 4.20 metres, was presented at the Exposition universelle of 1889. At the Salon of 1896, he presented Massacre des barbares par Hamilcar, also an oil on canvas. Saint-Georges terrassant le Dragon received a silver medal at the Exposition universelle of 1900.
Les Lions crucifiés is said to be held at the musée de Brou in Bourg-en-Bresse. Massacre des barbares par Hamilcar is recorded in the collections of Sorbonne Université in Paris. The musée Carnavalet holds Une femme au balcon, also titled Césarine Surand, mère du peintre, au balcon de l’appartement familial. Le Bar Romain, on rue de Caumartin in Paris, held thirteen paintings by Surand, including Fête de vendange donnée par Messaline dans le palais de Claude, en l’honneur de son amant Silius, dated 1905. A lot attributed to the artist under the title Liegender Tiger is described by the auction house as a watercolour signed at the lower right, measuring 37 × 54.5 centimetres.
