Giuseppe Bartolomeo Chiari was Carlo Maratta’s pupil and later his assistant in Rome. His work includes religious pictures, mythological subjects and extensive fresco decorations. He painted in the Colonna and Barberini palaces; his Aurora of 1690 and the ceiling of San Clemente, executed in 1715, mark important stages in this career serving Roman patrons.
In Bathsheba at Her Bath, painted around 1700 and preserved in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Chiari adapts a composition by his teacher with a lighter, more delicate manner. The museum connects this development with the taste that would inform French rococo painting. The Met also holds a red chalk Adoration of the Magi. Susannah and the Elders, in Baltimore’s Walters Art Museum, provides another example of his treatment of biblical narratives.
This profile brings together identity references for Giuseppe Bartolomeo Chiari and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
