The Danish illustrator, painter and stage designer Kay Nielsen made storytelling a space for visual invention. Born in 1886, he died in 1957. He studied in Paris before working for the Copenhagen theatre and showing his work in London and New York. His illustrations combine dramatic intensity with intricate detail, giving fairy tales and legends a visual presence that goes beyond accompanying a text. Pen, ink and watercolour shaped his project for The Arabian Nights, which remained unpublished for many years after its publishers abandoned it. His career later took him to the Disney studios, where he collaborated on Fantasia. From books to the stage and animation, he explored different ways of translating stories into a distinctive world of images.
This profile brings together identity references for Kay Rasmus Nielsen and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
