Giovanni Agostino Cassana belonged to a family of painters active between Venice, Florence and Genoa. Trained in his father’s workshop alongside his brothers, including Nicolò, he took a particular interest in animals and still life. His works are documented in Ferdinando de’ Medici’s inventories from 1697. He moved to Genoa in 1718 and died there in 1720, after a career whose individual stages remain incompletely known.
In Gallo, galline, oca e tacchino in un paesaggio, held in the UniCredit collection, birds take the leading role within a landscape. The Metropolitan Museum drawing Hunters with Dead Game in a Landscape demonstrates the difficulty of defining his oeuvre: the museum proposes Giovanni Agostino or Giovanni Battista Cassana as its maker. This reservation recalls the close artistic practices within the family workshop.
