Gillis Peeters the Elder belonged to an Antwerp family of painters. He became a guild master in 1634–1635 alongside his brother Bonaventura, with whom he shared a workshop for several years. Their collaborations included a depiction of the Battle of Kallo commissioned in 1639. Gillis also worked as a draughtsman and etcher.
Watermill by a Wooded Outcrop, an oval panel signed and dated 1633 in the Rijksmuseum, represents an early example of his landscape painting. In Rural Landscape of 1640, held by the Banco Santander collection, nymphs and satyrs occupy the left while a pastoral scene unfolds on the right. Animals and birds enliven this Italianate setting. His etching Farmhouse by a Country Road, published in Antwerp by Joannes Meyssens, extends his rural subjects into print.
