S. H. Raza

Born : 1922Died : 2016Documented citizenships : India

Sayed Haider Raza (1922–2016) belonged to the generation that renewed Indian art around the time of independence. A cofounder of the Progressive Artists Group in Bombay in 1947, he settled in Paris in 1950. His long French residence brought him into dialogue with the School of Paris and abstraction without severing his links to India’s visual and spiritual traditions.

The bindu, a symbolic point or seed, became central to his painting. Combined with geometrical structures and colour, it organises a reflection on origins and space. The Centre Pompidou holds Bindu, from 1986. A Paris retrospective traced his development in 2023, while the Musée Guimet explored the place of the mandala and sacred territory within his work.

This profile brings together identity references for S. H. Raza and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
