George Cole (1810–1883), a self-taught landscape painter, was the father of George Vicat Cole, who adopted his mother’s surname to distinguish his career. His work combines portraiture, animals and the representation of places. In 1839, Sir John Barker-Mill commissioned him to paint his Mottisfont estate: riders and hounds occupy the foreground before the house and stables.
In The London Road, Portsdown Hill (1867), held in Portsmouth, the expansive sky emphasises the coastal plain; a chalk pit appears before the still largely rural Portsea Island. Windsor from the River, at Anglesey Abbey, links landscape and activity differently: a barge and towing horses precede the castle in rising mist. Exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1878, this oil painting combines monument, river traffic and atmospheric effects.
